Learn How To Cross Stitch

Cross stitch is a type of counted-thread embroidery in which cross shaped stitches are used to weave the pattern. Cross stitching is done on countable even-weave fabric, or on non-countable fabric, on which a countable fabric called waste canvas is used which is removed after the project is complete. If you are new in this field then here are some easy to follow instructions that will help you learn how to cross stitch.

Follow the Given Instructions and Learn How to Cross Stitch

Getting Started : To learn how to cross stitch, it is preferred to purchase a small cross stitch kit, with simple pattern, that includes all the required materials necessary for cross stitch. If you want to purchase materials on your own then following are the list of materials that you must have :

  • A suitable fabric - The 14 HPI is best suited where HPI is Holes per Inch and determines the size of your stitches.
  • Blunt tapestry needle.
  • Cotton floss - Choose the colors that are specified on the cross stitch chart of your kit.

Before beginning, iron the fabric and begin weaving from the centre of the fabric. To find the centre, fold the fabric in half twice. The corner where the folds meet is the centre.

Stitching : There are two ways of stitching. The first one is to weave a line of half stitches and then weave back to complete the X's. Apply this method for the majority stitching. The second way is to weave complete X as you proceed. This method is suitable when weaving in vertical direction. All the X's must be crossed in the same direction, that is, the top thread of the X should have slope in the same direction to give uniform look. To begin stitching, insert appropriate colored cothen from the bacton thread into the needle and tk of the fabric, shove the needle through the fabric.
